Brothers Ivan and Maurizio grew up in the sun-baked region of Calabria in Southern Italy. Known for its rugged mountains, old-fashioned villages and dramatic coastlines, the brothers were first introduced to the distinctive and intense flavours of the region by their Grandmother, who was always cooking for extended family and friends in the house. From the boys first helping her to cook when they were young, a passion for Mediterranean cuisine was born – and it lead to Maurizio attending and graduating from catering school in the mid-90’s and setting out determined to one day have his own restaurant.
After moving to the UK, Maurizio managed London restaurant Paparazzi for six years, before deciding to use his expertise to branch out and develop his own restaurant in Tunbridge Wells. His first restaurant, St Augustine, was opened with his cousin Gianni – proving a big success and earning the team a great reputation amongst the people of Tunbridge Wells.
In 2006, after gaining professional bartending and sommelier qualifications in New York, Ivan joined Maurizio to launch Sopranos, with the aim of bringing a sophisticated, cosmopolitan dining experience to the area. The restaurant has won fans for it’s stunning food and perfectly matched drinks – and is well known as a destination for a great evening out.
As Soprano’s has gone from strength to strength, Maurizio has opened two further restaurants in Tunbridge Wells and Sevenoaks, continuing to bring people together over delicious food and drink.
